Gloria McCarthy serves as executive vice president and chief administrative officer for Anthem, Inc. As a member of the company’s executive leadership team, Ms. McCarthy leads the company’s service operations functions aimed at delivering exceptional, personalized service to Anthem’s nearly 40 million medical members and more than 73 million lives served. She also oversees key enterprise functions, including Information Technology (IT), Corporate Real Estate, and Procurement. Ms. McCarthy also leads Anthem’s continuous improvement, business planning and operational review activities, and a dedicated business improvement group focused on driving cross-functional execution to ensure Anthem’s strategic objectives are achieved across all operational and organizational lines.
Ms. McCarthy joined Anthem in 2006, and has more than 40 years of industry leadership experience advancing operational execution and excellence. Prior to her current role, she served as Anthem’s executive vice president of Enterprise Execution and Efficiency and executive vice president of the Office of the CEO, where she led Anthem's evolution to a high-performing, more affordable operating model. Other leadership positions held during her tenure include senior vice president of Operational Excellence, senior vice president of Service Operations, and senior vice president and chief operating officer for Anthem's East Region.
Ms. McCarthy previously served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of WellChoice, which merged with Anthem in 2006. In this capacity, she was responsible for Operations, Medical Management, Sales, Marketing and Information Technology, and worked closely with the United States Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services as the head of WellChoice’s Medicare Strategic Business Unit.
Ms. McCarthy earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Herbert H. Lehman College in New York and her Master of Business Administration from Iona College in New York.
